New Paid Leave and Minimum Wage Laws for Several California Cities
Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Monica recently enacted paid sick leave and minimum wage laws. Additionally, the City of Pasadena increased its minimum wage to $10.50 per hour for employers with at least 26 employees as of July 1, 2016, and for employers with 25 or fewer employees as of July 1, 2017. Moreover, San Francisco amended its paid sick leave law.
These local ordinances follow California's statewide paid sick leave law, the "Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014,” which went into effect last year, and the January 1, 2016 state minimum-wage rate increase. Employers must comply with both laws and may now be required to provide greater paid sick time benefits and minimum-wage rates to employees who work in these cities than required by state law.
